Working in Jersey
Welcome to Jersey, where career and lifestyle unite!
Who Needs Work Permits and Licences?
British citizens and nationals of the European Economic Area do not need work permits to work in Jersey. However, if you wish to work in Jersey's finance sector, you'll need a licence from your employer unless you have ‘entitled to work’ status.
Living and working in Jersey
Buying Property
Non-residents need to live in Jersey for a significant continuous period before they can buy property. People who are entitled to work in Jersey fall into one of four categories: Entitled, Licensed, Entitled to Work, and Registered.
Entitled Residents
The ‘Entitled’ category is for those born in Jersey or who have lived here for at least 10 continuous years. ‘Entitled’ residents can buy or lease any ‘Qualified’ property, set up a business, or work without needing a licence.
Licensed Residents
If you are moving to Jersey for work, your employer will likely have obtained an essential employment permit for you, classifying you as a ‘Licensed’ resident. Licensed residents can lease or buy any ‘Qualified’ property as soon as they arrive, provided they remain ‘essentially employed.’ The right to buy property depends on the terms of the individual licence.
Entitled to Work Residents
Residents who are ‘Entitled to Work’ can work without restrictions and do not require a licence. They are typically locally born or have lived in Jersey continuously for over 10 years.
Registered Residents
This category applies to those who don’t qualify under other categories but comply with immigration restrictions. Registered residents can live and work in Jersey but can only lease ‘Registered Property’ and work in positions where the employer has a licence to hire a 'Registered' person.
Registration Cards
Under the new housing law, anyone coming to work in Jersey must have a Registration Card to live and work here, buy or rent property, transfer land, or stay longer than 3 months. The card costs £75 for newcomers and £35 for those who lived in Jersey before July 1, 2013. To obtain a card, visit the Social Security Office in La Motte Street, St Helier, with your photographic ID. Licensed residents also need a letter from their employer’s HR department confirming their employment status and any residential restrictions.
